MY PHILOSOPHY

I can be summed up succinctly: love & logic.

I use my time to pursue things that capture my fancy. I read what I find interesting. I write when I'm inspired. I publish when I think I have something worthwhile to say. I sleep when I'm tired. I eat when I'm hungry. I exercise for enjoyment, not health.

I avoid social media, since it is largely in conflict with worthwhile thought. I have no desire to become an influencer of any type, have followers, gain admiration, give speeches, etc. So, no: you won't be following me on social media or watching me give presentations in front of large audiences.

I got into wisdom coaching mainly because I realized that my years of researching philosophy could be radically reconfigured to provide enormous help to people in their professional and personal lives. It took many years to put the material together, but it was worth it.

EDUCATION AND CAREER

I've spent my life studying mathematics, physics, logic, philosophy, and cognitive science. It took just 40 years.

In college I studied quantum mechanics and high-energy particle physics. I was distracted by philosophical questions about, well, everything.

When I first went to graduate school, at the University of Southern California, I was a PhD student in physics.  Then I found out that I loved philosophy even more. So, I stopped with a Master's degree in physics.

I next earned my PhD in philosophy. Two things made me into a decent philosopher. First, graduate courses in mathematical logic (in the math department) and symbolic logic (in the philosophy department) showed me how to reason more carefully than others. Second, I had the excellent fortune to experience the transition from "I am completely confident that this philosophical thesis is totally true" to "No. Just no. It's false. Damn" on multiple occasions.

I taught at universities in the USA, UK, Asia, continental Europe, and the Middle East.

In my spare time, I enjoy exercising and writing fiction. I've written one mediocre novel and have plans for additional ones that are even worse.
